How then can we equip them with the necessary skills to read smartly and accurately? This panel shares tips and how we can teach children to read with a discerning eye.

Debra Ann Francisco

Debra Ann Francisco (Singapore)

Debra taught English Language, Literature and General Paper in MOE schools for more than 14 years. She has been helming educational content development as The Straits Times Schools team’s teaching specialist, and working with Singapore schools on the professional development of teachers in news-in-education. Debra has published several award-winning educational resources, including Mastering English with The Straits Times, which won the Best Educational Title at the Singapore Book Publishers Awards 2018. She is also the author of a series of five illustrated books for children about the heritage food of Singapore’s main ethnic groups.

Mary George

Mary George (Singapore)

Mary, a child development specialist and psychologist, promotes ways in which teachers and parents can actively enable children to make sense of the world on their own terms. Dr George's therapeutic work includes helping challenged kids and teens to be better processors of what they read, hear, and see. Mary is also an editor and publisher of What's Up, a monthly children's newspaper in Singapore. 

Loh Chin Ee

Moderator Loh Chin Ee (Singapore)

Chin Ee is Associate Professor and Deputy Head (Research) at the English Language and Literature Academic Group at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. She is the co-editor of Little ThingsPoetry Moves and co-author of Teaching Poetry to Adolescents: A Teachers' Guide to Little Things by Ethos Books. She is also the co-editor of Literature Education in the Asia-Pacific: Polices, Practices and Perspectives in Global Times (Routledge, 2018).
